Happy Birthday to King Abdullah of Malaysia, who turns 60 today! The eldest son of Paduka Ayahanda Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang and Tengku Ampuan Afzan, he grew up and was educated in Pahang before studying at Aldenham School and Davis College in the United Kingdom, where he also went to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Worcester College, Oxford and Queen Elizabeth College. Appointed Crown Prince of Pahang in 1975, he was made Regent between 1979 and 1984, when his father served as the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong (King of Malaysia), and again from 2016 to his accession after his father’s Abdication in January 2019. Later that month, he was elected as the 16th Yang Di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, following the surprise abdication of the 15th King of the world’s only rotational Monarchy. His ceremonial installation as King will take place later today. In 1986, he married Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah of Johor with whom he has four sons, including the current Crown Prince and Regent of Pahang, and two daughters, and married Cik Puan Julia Rais in 1991, with whom he has three daughters. The King is also the vice-president of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) executive committee and president of the Asian Hockey Federation.
