Princess Diana’s Oman Sapphire Suite

August 31st will mark the 20th Anniversary of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, one of the most iconic women of the last century. In honour of her death anniversary, we are featuring 20 of her most iconic jewels in the 20 days leading up to August 31st. Today’s feature is her Oman Sapphire Suite, composed of a necklace, earrings, and bracelet set in a modern style, which was a gift from (you guessed it) the Sultan of Oman during a 1986 Tour of the Gulf States-

The Princess debuted the Oman Suite for a Banquet in Bonn during a 1987 Tour of Germany, pairing the modern design with the antique motifs of the Spencer Tiara. The result brought some of the most iconic images of the Princess.

The Oman Suite was worn later the same year, with a Murray Arbeid gown, for a Gala Performance at the Royal Opera House in Covent garden.

The next month, the Princess of Wales wore the suite for a fashion show at the Sydney Opera House during a Tour of Australia.

The last time the Princess was pictured wearing the set was at the premiere of the film ‘Haunted’ at the Empire Cinema in London in October 1995. It now belongs to Prince William and Prince Harry, but has yet to be seen, possibly because of it’s 80s style.

What do you think? Is this suite an outdated relic? or will it coordinate well with modern styles?
