Happy Birthday to Princess Margherita of Savoy-Aosta, the Dowager Archduchess of Austria-Este, the Italian Princess who married the second son of the last Emperor of Austria. We have covered a variety of her jewels, like the Savoy-Aosta Tiara, Austria-Este Tiara, and the Savoy-Aosta Bandeau Tiara, but have been saving one of her most magnificent jewels for today, the Savoy-Aosta Emerald Necklace.
Today marks the 90th Anniversary of the death of Queen Victoria of Sweden, who died on this day in 1930. Born Princess Viktoria of Baden, she brought a plethora of jewels into the Swedish Royal Family when she married the future King Gustav V of Sweden in 1881, including today’s Pearl Corsage Brooch. The Queen, Prince Philip, the Prince of Wales and Princess Anne were in the midst of an extensive tour of the South Pacific 50 years ago, visiting Fiji, Tonga, New Zealand, and Australia to mark the bi-centenary of Captain James Cook’s maiden voyage to Australia in 1770.
