Princess Inaara Aga Khan

Happy Birthday to Princess Inaara Aga Khan, who turns 57 today! Born Gabriele Renate Homey, she is the daughter of successful German entrepreneurs, Renate Thyssen-Henne and Helmut Friedhelm Homey, adopting the surname ‘Thyssen’ from her stepfather Bodo Thyssen. After studying at the Schloss Salem School on Lake Constance and the École des Roches in Normandy, she read jurisprudence at the Universities of Munich and Cologne, and graduated magna cum laude with a doctorate in International Law after completing her thesis on German-American commercial law. She worked in the management of her mother’s company and later as an associate attorney for a German law firm. In 1991, she married Prince Karl Emich of Leiningen, having a daughter, Princess Theresa of Leiningen, before getting divorced in 1998. Princess Gabriele became a consultant for UNESCO in Paris, advising on the promotion of equality and improved conditions for women, before she married Prince Karim Aga Khan, the the 49th hereditary Imam of the Nizari branch of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims and became the Begum Aga Khan. They had a son, Prince Aly Muhammad Aga Khan, before separating in 2004 and their divorce being finalized in 2014, auctioning part of her jewellery collection at Christie’s in 2016. Princess Inaara is committed to charitable causes, particularly those involving women’s rights, educational projects and the improvement of opportunities and living conditions for people of all faiths and origins in developing countries, through the ‘Princess Inaara Foundation’.
