Growing up at the family’s various Stately Homes in England and Scotland, during WWI, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon helped run a convalescent home at Glamis Castle, the family seat. In 1923, she married Prince Albert, Duke of York, second son of King George V and Queen Mary. The Duke and Duchess of York had two daughters, Princess (later Queen) Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, before unexpectedly becoming Sovereigns of Britain, due to his brother’s abdication in 1936. Leading the country during WWII had a serious strain on the Kings health, leading to his death in 1952. As the mother of the new Queen, the Queen Mother, had no defined role, however, during her long widowhood, she became known for her sense of duty, her ability to enjoy life, and her humour. She died a beloved public figure, at the ripe old age of 101, in 2002.
