The Princess of Wales wore the Queen Mother’s Amethyst Necklace for the Royal Film Premiere of ‘Digger’ in London last night, which was a wedding gift from Queen Alexandra in 1923 but was first publicly pictured almost 90 years later on Queen Camilla!
When Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon married the Duke of York in 1923, Queen Alexandra gave the bride a seed pearl and amethyst necklace with a heart-shaped amethyst clasp.
Like many of the other wedding gifts, the Necklace went on public display at St James’ Palace with a note from Queen Alexandra that read “For my dear future grand daughter Elisabeth from her affte Grand Mother.”
Queen Alexandra herself had a wonderful collection of Amethysts, including an Amethyst and Diamond Tiara given to her as a gift from her brother-in-law, Tsar Alexander III of Russia, and sister, Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia and a spectacular Amethyst Necklace.
While the Duchess of York, later the Queen Mother, was never publicly pictured wearing the Amethyst Necklace, she was described wearing the piece during the period of Court Mourning following the death of Queen Alexandra in 1925.
Nearly 90 years after it was given as a wedding gift, the Queen Mother’s Amethyst Necklace was worn by the then Duchess of Cornwall for the London Premiere of Skyfall in 2012.
Now, the Princess of Wales wore the Queen Mother’s Amethyst Necklace paired with the Collingwood Pearl Earrings for the Royal Film Performance World Premiere of ‘Digger’ at the ODEON Luxe in Leicester Square in London. Lets hope we see it worn again soon!
