Princess Viggo’s Diamond Fringe Tiara

Today marks the 60th Anniversary of the Death of Princess Viggo of Denmark, who passed away on this day in 1966! The wealthy American Heiress for whom a Danish Prince gave up his place in the line of succession, and who became a beloved philanthropist, Princess Viggo possessed some spectacular Jewels, including this spectacular Diamond Fringe Tiara!

The exact origin of the Tiara is unknown, but like all of her jewels, it was personally acquired by Princess Viggo. Due to her massive jewellery collection, Princess Viggo was only pictured wearing the Diamond Fringe Tiara on a handful of occasions during the 1950s and the 1960s, including the Wedding Ball of King Constantine II of Greece and Princess Anne Marie of Denmark at the Royal Palace of Athens in 1964.

After the childless Princess Viggo’s death in 1966, her Jewels were divided between family members. Her Garnet Kokoshnik Tiara and Moonstone Tiara went to her nephew, Count Flemming of Rosenborg to be worn by his wife Countess Ruth, while a Diamond Scroll Tiara and this Diamond Fringe Tiara was inherited by his brother, Prince George. A Diamond Spike Tiara was inherited by another nephew, Count Christian of Rosenborg, while a Sapphire Parure was left to another niece, Queen Anne of Romania.

A few years later, Prince George’s wife, Princess Anne notably wore the Diamond Fringe Tiara for the New Year’s Court at Amalienborg Palace in 1974.

A few months later, the Diamond Fringe Tiara was worn again for the Return Banquet held at Claridge’s Hotel in London during the Danish State Visit to Britain in 1974.

After Princess Anne’s death in 1980, the Diamond Scroll Tiara was given to her only daughter, Lady Elizabeth Anson, and her Diamond Tiara was worn by her daughter-in-law, the Countess of Lichfield, but the fate of Princess Viggo’s Diamond Fringe Tiara remains unknown, though we have a possible theory that it remains in a royal collection, which we will share later this month!
