Italian State Visit to Norway

The Norwegian Royal Family are hosting Italian President Sergio Mattarella and his daughter, Laura Mattarella, who are on a State Visit to Norway on May 11th and 12th, to celebrate and build diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties following the last Norwegian State Visit to Italy in 2016King Harald V is in Hospital, so Crown Prince Regent Haakon is hosting the State Visit on the King’s behalf.

In the morning, Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon and and Crown Princess Mette-Marit received President Sergio Mattarella and Laura Mattarella in an Official Welcome Ceremony in the Palace Square in Oslo, which was followed by a wreath laying ceremony at Akershus fortress. Later, the Queen and Laura Mattarella visited the Munchmuseet in Oslo, before joining the Crown Prince and President on a tour of the National Museum and a boat trip on the Oslo Fjord where the theme was green and climate-friendly urban development.

In the evening evening, the Crown Prince Regent and Queen Sonja hosted a State Banquet at the Royal Palace of Oslo in honour of President Borut Pahor, which was also attended by Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Princess Astrid. Both the Crown Prince and President gave speeches, with the Crown Prince saying:

We are very grateful for Italy’s action, willingness to share knowledge and the solidarity you showed towards Norway and other countries. All this while you yourselves were in a terribly difficult situation. By making the demanding choices that Italy made in an early phase, the spread of infection in and from Italy was significantly limited. Many lives were saved thanks to their efforts.

Queen Sonja wore Queen Josefina’s Diamond Tiara with Queen Alexandra’s Diamond Chandelier Earrings

Crown Princess Mette-Marit wore the Amethyst Necklace Tiara, Earrings, and Bracelets while Princess Astrid was wearing her Gold Bandeau Tiara.
