Princess Ragnhild’s Pearl Brooch

Today marks the 10th Anniversary of the Death of the late Princess Ragnhild of Norway, who passed away on this day in 2012. The elder sister of King Harald, who married her former bodyguard and moved to Brazil, Princess Ragnhild possessed a variety of heirloom jewels, like today’s piece, her Diamond and Pearl Brooch

Of unknown Provenance, this antique Diamond and Pearl Brooch likely comes from the collection of Queen Maud of Norway, Crown Princess Martha or Princess Ingeborg of Sweden, though they were not photographed in this piece. Princess Ragnhild began wearing the Brooch in the 1960s, with Princess Ingeborg’s Boucheron Pearl Circle Tiara.

Princess Ragnhild often wore the Brooch through the 1980s and 1990s, paired with the Boucheron Pearl Circle Tiara or Queen Maud’s Diamond Tiara, for a variety of occasions including King Harald’s 50th Birthday in 1987, Crown Prince Haakon’s Confirmation in 1988, Crown Prince Haakon’s 18th Birthday in 1991, and for King Harland and Queen Sonja’s Silver Anniversary in 1993.

In 2001, the Pearl and Diamond Brooch was worn for the Wedding of Crown Prince Haakon of Norway in Oslo, and the following year for the Wedding of Princess Märtha Louise of Norway in Trondheim.  It is unknown if the Brooch has remained with Princess Ragnhild’s children or has returned to the main Norwegian Royal Family after her death in 2012, like the Boucheron Pearl Circle Tiara or Queen Maud’s Diamond Tiara , so lets hope we see these heirlooms worn again soon!
