Happy Birthday to Lady Sarah Chatto, who turns 58 today! The only daughter of Princess Margaret and Anthony Armstrong Jones, Lord Snowdon, she was born during the Royal Baby Boom of 1964, and is the only niece of Queen Elizabeth II. Inheriting the bulk of her mother’s jewellery collection, Lady Sarah wears quite a lot of special heirloom pieces these days, which include Princess Margaret’s Diamond Ear-of-Wheat Brooch!
A spectacular antique Diamond Ear-of-Wheat, this is brooch of unknown provenance and was likely a gift for her 21st Birthday or a gift for christening a ship. The first appearance of the Diamond Ear-of-Wheat Brooch came for a Ball at Hutchinson House in aid of the National Sports Development Fund in 1951, also being paired with the Cartier Halo Tiara for the Swedish State Visit to Britain in 1954 and on a Tour of the Caribbean in 1955. The Brooch does not seem to have been publicly worn after the 1950s.
After Princess Margaret’s death in 2002, while many of her jewels were sold by her children at the famous 2006 Christie’s Auction, the Diamond Ear-of-Wheat Brooch was inherited by her only daughter, Lady Sarah, worn for Christmas in 2008, and also when Lady Sarah, the Vice President of the the Royal Ballet School, opened the new White Lodge Museum and Ballet Resource Centre in Richmond Park in 2009. The Brooch has also been worn for an Easter Service at Windsor Castle.
More recently, Lady Sarah wore Princess Margaret’s Diamond Ear-of-Wheat Brooch for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Memorial Service at Westminster Abbey in March. Lets hope we continue to see this beautiful royal heirloom for years to come!
