It has been announced that Antony Armstrong-Jones, the 1st Earl of Snowdon, society photographer and ex-husband of Princess Margaret, has died aged 86 today! The only son of Ronald Armstrong-Jones with his wife Anne Messel, later Countess of Rosse, Antony Armstrong-Jones was educated at Eton and Cambridge before becoming a photographer. In 1960, he married Princess Margaret, only sister of Queen Elizabeth II, and was made Earl of Snowdon in 1961. The couple had two children, the 2nd Earl of Snowdon and Lady Sarah Chatto, but the marriage failed mainly due to affairs on both sides. Lord Snowdon continued to photograph the Royal Family, and married Lucy Lindsay-Hogg in 1978, having a daughter Lady Frances Armstrong-Jones in 1979. In 2000, after his mistress committed suicide and he fathered a son age 68, the couple separated. Lord Snowdon was a renowned photographer, with his subjects ranging from Laurence Olivier and Marlene Dietrich to Diana, Princess of Wales and Elizabeth Taylor. One of my favourite pictures is of Princess Margaret wearing the Poltimore Tiara in the bath, which as taken by him ahead of an official engagement. His son, Lord Linley, becomes the 2nd Earl of Snowdon. Our condolences, thoughts, and prayers are with his family!
