Princess Märtha Louise’s Wedding Brooch

Princess Märtha Louise of Norway is set to celebrate her 50th Birthday next week! The only daughter of King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway, and the only Princess of the Blood of her generation, Princess Märtha Louise has accumulated quite a substantial jewellery collection, which are featuring in the days leading up to her Birthday, continuing with her Wedding Brooch!

Composed of a styled ‘A’ in cultured pearls, 16 brilliants, and gold, this sentimental Brooch was a gift to Princess Märtha Louise at the time of her Wedding in 2002, likely a gift from the groom, Ari Behn, with the ‘A’ standing for Ari. The Brooch was first worn as a clasp to tie her coat for the Wedding at the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, and was later moved to her gown for the Reception at the Stiftsgården, coordinating nicely with Queen Maud’s Pearl Tiara. It was described as:

a jewel in the shape of the letter A made of cultured pearls, 18-carat gold and 16 brilliants. In the cathedral the jewel was worn on the jacket and later in the evening as a brooch on the wedding dress

Either that year or the next, Princess Märtha Louise paired her Wedding Brooch with the King Olav Gift Tiara and her Pearl Choker at the annual Banquet for members of the Norwegian Parliament, making a splendid pairing of pearl jewels.

More recently, Princess Märtha Louise wore her Wedding Brooch at the Wedding of her cousin, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg, in 2012, which was one of the few weddings she attended without her then husband, Ari, a few years before their divorce. After their divorce and Ari’s tragic suicide on Christmas Day in 2019, there is little chance that Princess Märtha Louise will wear her Wedding Brooch again, but lets hope we get to see it on their three daughters, as a memento of their late father!

  1. TBH, I wasn’t aware of this brooch before even though she wore it at her wedding! The circumstances of Ari’s death are so sad that I agree we may have to wait a while for one of his daughters to wear it again. Congratulations to Princess Martha Louise on reaching this milestone birthday! I wish her joy!
