Princess Caroline’s Reed Stomacher

Happy Birthday to Princess Caroline of Monaco and Hanover, who turns 62 today! The elder sister of Prince Albert II and only beneficiary of her grandmother, Princess Charlotte, and mother, Princess Grace, Princess Caroline has a magnificent jewellery collection, but today’s piece is a newer acquisition.

Reportedly a gift from fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, the creative director of the French luxury fashion house Chanel and a close family friend, the antique diamond reed stomacher, or devant de corsage, was first seen on Princess Caroline in the 1990s, most notably the 1999 Rose Ball in Monaco.

In 2004, Princess Caroline paired the Reed Stomacher with the Hanoverian Floral Tiara and her diamond floral earrings at Crown Prince Frederik’s Pre-Wedding Gala Concert.

One of the more recent appearences of the Reed Stomacher was at the Monaco National Day Gala in 2010, again paired with Princess Caroline’s diamond floral earrings. With a plethora of gala appearences every year, there is no doubt we will continue to see the distinctive piece for years to come.

  1. This is kind of a weird ornament, but I must say it looks very nice when Princess Caroline wore it in 1999 against the black background of her one shoulder dress. It’s not as successful with the beige dress. Black seems to work best, maybe because it’s so ornate- and large! Still, it must be said that it’s a work of art.

  2. Gosh, I forgot to say that I took another look at Princess Caroline’s sapphire parure and was enchanted again. That one, as well as Queen Margrethe’s sapphires from queen Alexandrine, are my total favorites!!!
