Happy Birthday to one of my favourite Royals, Princess Alexandra of Kent, the Hon. Lady Ogilvy! The second child and only daughter of Prince George, Duke of Kent and Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark, Princess Alexandra was born just weeks after the abdication of her uncle King Edward VIII. Her godparents include Queen Maud of Norway (great-aunt), King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (uncle and aunt), Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna, Princess Nicholas of Greece (grandmother), Princess Olga of Yugoslavia (aunt), Princess Beatrice (great-great aunt), the Earl of Athlone (grand-uncle), and Count Carl Theodor of Törring-Jettenbach (uncle). Princess Alexandra lost her father in 1942, during the Second World War, and grew up at the family’s country house, Coppins, in Buckinghamshire, becoming the first British princess to attend boarding school, Heathfield School near Ascot, before she studied in Paris and also trained at Great Ormond Street Hospital. The Queen’s only paternal female cousin, Princess Alexandra has been supporting the Queen since 1953, remaining one of her closest friends and being a patron of over 100 charities. She has often represented the Queen, on many occasions, including tours of Australia, Canada Hong Kong, and she even granted independence to Nigeria in 1960. In 1963, Princess Alexandra married the Hon. Angus Ogilvy, son of the Earl of Airlie, at Westminster Abbey, and the couple had two children, James and Marina, who in turn had two children of their own. The Princess continued her official duties after the wedding, and after being widowed in 2004, Princess Alexandra remains one of the busiest members of the Royal Family, though she has suffered from ill health in recent years. We wish HRH many Happy Returns and the best of health in the future!
