The Prince of Wales hosted the first annual Garden Party of 2022 at Buckingham Palace on May 11th, for the first time since 2019. There are usually four annual Garden Parties hosted by the Royal Family at Buckingham Palace and the Palace of Holyrood House for around 30,000 guests yearly, as well as a few special others, though the Queen has announced in advance that she will not be attending any of the Garden Parties this year. 60 years ago, in May 1962, European Royalty and Aristocracy gathered in the city of Athens for a week full of celebrations, culminating in the Catholic and Orthodox Wedding Ceremonies of Juan Carlos, Prince of Asturias, and Princess Sofia of Greece and Denmark. On one of the evenings, the distinguished guests enjoyed a Soirée at the Hotel Grande Bretagne, where many of the Royals were staying for the week.
Happy Birthday to Princess Irene of Greece, who turns 80 today! The youngest daughter of King Paul of Greece and Princess Frederica of Hanover, and the sister of King Constantine of Greece and Queen Sofia of Spain, Princess Irene has attended a plethora glittering events, though except for the Greek Pearl and Diamond Necklace Tiara and Queen Sophie’s Diamond Circle Tiara, she does not possess the large collection of her sister and sister-in-law, though today’s piece is one of her few major jewels: Princess Irene’s Diamond Circle Necklace! The Prince of Wales, joined by the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duke of Cambridge, in his role as a Councillor of State, represented the Queen at the Official Opening of the Session of Parliament in the Chamber of the House of Lords at the Palace of Westminster in London on May 10th. This was a ‘dressed down’ version of the State Opening, devoid of pageantry and ceremony, like the State Openings in 2019 and 2021, with the last ‘proper’ State Opening in 2019.The Queen has pulled out of this year’s State Opening due to her ongoing mobility issues.

The Bourbon-Parma Princess who became the last Empress of Austria and then a tragic widow for over seven decades in exile, Empress Zita once possessed a spectacular jewellery collection, but her most worn piece was this striking Jet Tiara!

Today marks the Anniversary of the Birth of Crown Princess Cecilie of Prussia, who was passed away on this day in 1954! Daughter of the Grand Duke and Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, she married the German Crown Prince Wilhelm, in 1905. The couple had four sons and two daughters, though the marriage was very unhappy, ending up in separation.
