Sultan of Selangor’s Silver Jubilee

The Royal Family of Selangor celebrated the Silver Jubilee of Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj of Selangor with a grand Investiture Ceremony in the Balairung Seri of the Istana Alam Shah in Klang on October 25th, ahead of the 25th Anniversary of the Sultan’s Accession on November 22nd.

Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, the Tengku Permaisuri (Queen) of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah, the Raja Muda (Crown Prince) and Datin Paduka Seri Afzaa Fadini joined Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah for the Investiture Ceremony in the Balairung Seri of the Istana Alam Shah in Klang, while a planned Banquet was cancelled ‘out of concern for the global economic climate and financial hardships faced by the public’.

His Majesty Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, graciously attended the State Grandeur Award Ceremony, taking the Oath and raising the Dignity of the High Officials of the Palace and Dato’ Raja of Selangor. The event also included the State Grandeur Award Ceremony in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee Celebration of His Majesty’s Reign at Balairung Seri, Istana Alam Shah, Klang.

His Majesty was accompanied by DYMM Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Hajah Norashikin. Also attending were DYTM Raja Muda Selangor Tengku Amir Shah and YM Datin Paduka Seri Afzaa Fadini.

The ceremony of coronation, swearing-in, and elevation of the Sultan’s Majesty, in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee celebration of the reign of DYMM Sultan of Selangor, involved two High Officials of the Palace and one Dato’ Raja of Selangor. The coronation ceremony in Selangor aimed to perfect the conferment of a royal title through customs, a pledge of loyalty, and the recipient’s acknowledgment of the Sultan’s sovereignty. The ceremony officially declared the title granted by DYMM Sultan Selangor as the Third Class of the Selangor Royal Highness (S.M.S.) and the title of Dato’ Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah (D.S.I.S.) as the First Class of the Sultan’s Majesty (D.S.I.S.) in 2015.

The Sultan of Selangor also inspected 106 officers and members of the Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) from the Lumut Base Command in the Mahkota Field outside Istana Alam Shah in Klang

In conjunction with the Silver Jubilee Celebration of the Government of DYMM Sultan Selangor, His Majesty graciously officiated the Ceremony of the Inspection of the Main Honor Guard (KKU) involving 106 officers and members of the Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) from the Lumut Base Command, accompanied by the KD Panglima Hitam Flag, before the commencement of the Ceremony of the Awarding of the Selangor State Grandeur Order. The KKU Ceremony held at the Mahkota Field, Istana Alam Shah, Klang was also accompanied by 25 artillery honor shots fired by the Royal Malaysian Army’s Royal Artillery Regiment (RAD).

Sultan Sharafuddin wore the State Crown of the Sultan of Selangor while Queen Norashikin wore the Selangor Diamond Crescent Tiara.

His Majesty’s Speech:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings, and peace be upon you.

I take this opportunity to repeat and renew my oath to uphold the sanctity of Islam at all times and to govern the state of Selangor with full justice, fairness, and honesty for the well-being of the people, in accordance with the laws of the State of Selangor, 1959.

I take this opportunity to reiterate my oath to continue upholding the sanctity of Islam and to govern with full justice, fairness, and responsibility for the well-being of the people and the beloved state of Selangor.

However, I want to emphasize that the progress of a state is not solely based on the amount of investment reaching billions of ringgit, rapid development, or high GDP. What good is a state having great wealth if its people are still living in hardship? True progress is when the wealth of the state is enjoyed and shared by all its citizens.

For example, a prosperous and wealthy state, especially its poor and needy people, should benefit and enjoy that wealth. The people should always feel that they are not forgotten by the government in pursuing rapid development.

To achieve the goal of “success for the people,” I take a proactive approach to constantly reprimand and address all matters concerning the state government. I want to explain to the people that when I reprimand, give my opinion, and voice my concerns about an issue related to the state government, it is not done to interfere in the affairs of the government, but rather to ensure that the well-being and comfort of the people are always given top priority. I do not want the people to see my reprimand as a quarrel or a shift between me and the government. On the contrary, I want every reprimand to be seen as part of my responsibility to ensure that the state government always gives top priority to the interests and future of Selangor.

However, what saddens me is when reprimands or “orders” in the language of the palace are misinterpreted by some parties and a few politicians, as if I want to interfere in the affairs of the state government or to implement absolute monarchy. I want to emphasize that I am very well aware of the provisions of the law and know how far my role and responsibility lie under the system of the Constitutional Monarchy and Parliamentary Democracy that this country and the state of Selangor practice.

I also respect the provisions of the Selangor State Government Act, 1959, as well as the provisions of the Federal Constitution related to my position as Sultan. For a long time, I have been carrying out my government based on trust and responsibility under my authority. I believe that every party entrusted with the government has their own responsibilities to be respected and carried out with full integrity.

I will also continue to fulfill my responsibilities to maintain the position of Islam as the state religion, and to ensure that Islam is continuously respected and practiced by the Muslim community in Selangor without anyone questioning it. At the same time, I call on all the people of Selangor to continue living in peace, mutual respect, and understanding with one another.

Malaysia, and especially the state of Selangor, has a multi-ethnic, multi-religious, and multi-cultural society. Differences in ethnicity, religion, and culture should not be a reason for us to become hostile. I call on the people to be careful in handling sensitive matters. Let us not use the freedom of speech to the point of offending the feelings of other races, religions, or their beliefs. We must live in harmony with mutual respect among one another. Freedom must be accompanied by responsibility. Differences in opinions must be accompanied by good manners. And progress must be accompanied by human values. I want Selangor to continue to be a peaceful, prosperous state, and for its people to live united and harmonious.

To the government, I urge you to strive hard to achieve success and progress in all fields. I want to see Selangor become a state that continues to progress, be competitive, have a high level of modernization, knowledgeable and excellent people, and at the same time continue to uphold the values of religion, good manners, and humanity.

Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to the Almighty Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala for giving me the opportunity for 25 years as Sultan to carry out this trust. I firmly adhere to the slogan of my palace, which is “Defend and Remain Loyal to the Islamic Religion,” “Serve the People and the Nation.” I would like to thank all the people of Selangor whom I love, who have given me full support, prayed for me, and placed their trust in me to rule the state of Selangor for this long time. I do not consider these 25 years as my personal achievement. Rather, I see them as a trust and a service to the people that I must fulfill. As long as Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala gives me strength and opportunity, I will continue to fulfill this trust to the best of my ability. I promise to continue to protect the people, safeguard the religion, and preserve the state of Selangor from any threats.

May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala continue to protect Selangor, grant well-being to all its people, and bestow upon this state peace, prosperity, and lasting success.

Before I conclude my message, I would like to quote the 12th verse of the Raja Ali Haji song from my lineage:

A king who unites with the minister,

Like a garden full of thorns.

A true heart for the king,

A sign of any work.

The law of justice for the people,

A sign of the king’s grace.

To love those who are knowledgeable,

A sign of mercy upon oneself.

To respect those who are wise,

A sign of mercy upon oneself.

To respect those who are wise,

A sign of recognizing the value and worth of others.

Remembering death,

That is the truest form of service.

This world is too real,

For a heart that is not blind.

Wabillahi taufiq walhidayah,

Wassalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
