Happy Birthday to Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, the Tengku Permaisuri (Queen) of Selangor, who turns 55 today! The former News Presenter who is now the Queen of Malaysia’s largest and wealthiest Sultanate, to mark the day, we are featuring the new Selangor Lover’s Knot Tiara!
The Tiara is composed of a row of pearls topped by diamond swags and lovers knots which are embellished with large South Sea Pearls. We have been told that the Tiara is a new commission and was created in Malaysia, which is quite a rarity for Malay Royal Jewels.
The design is inspired by the original the Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara created for Princess Augusta, Duchess of Cambridge around 1818. There are five or six identical Lover’s Knot Tiaras in existence, with the original Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara now belonging to the Princess von Waldburg zu Zeil und Trauchburg, the identical Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot Tiara now worn by the Princess of Wales, and the Bavarian Lover’s Knot Tiara still with the Bavarian Royal Family, while the others are in private collections or have disappeared.
Since its creation, Queen Norashikin has notably worn the Lover’s Knot Tiara for the Sultan of Selangor’s 79th Birthday Investiture and Ceremony at the Istana Alam Shah in Klang in December 2024.
The Tiara was also worn for an Official Portrait which was likely taken the same day, and while Queen Norashikin prefers to wear the Diamond Fringe Tiara, there is no doubt we will continue to see the Lover’s Knot Tiara worn for years to come!
