Royal Guests and Relatives from around Europe joined the Dutch Royal Family to celebrate the Wedding of Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands and Claus von Amsberg in Amsterdam on this day in 1966, 60 years ago, which followed a Ball at the Royal Palace of Amsterdam, a Gala at the Amstel Hotel in Amsterdam and a Dinner at the Prinsenhof in Delft.
In the early morning, Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands married Claus von Amsberg in a civil ceremony at the Amsterdam Town Hall, the Prinsenhof, in a brief ceremony conducted by Mayor Dr. Gijsbert Van Hall.
Afterwards, Princess Beatrix and the new Prince Claus traveled to the Westerkerk in the Golden Coach for the Religious Wedding Service, conducted by Reverend Johannes Hendrik Sillevis Smitt.
Following the Service, Princess Beatrix and Prince Claus rode back to the Royal Palace of Amsterdam in the 1898 Coronation Coach, with the journey marked by protesters rushing at the carriage, throwing smoke bombs at the wedding procession and chanting slogans like “Claus ‘raus!” (Claus out!) and “Mijn fiets terug” (Return my bicycle).
However, Princess Beatrix and Prince Claus waved to the cheering crowds from the Balcony of the Royal Palace before the Official Portraits were taken.
Princess Beatrix wore a white silk and duchesse satin gown by Caroline Berge-Farwick of Maison Linette, with the Württemberg Ornate Pearl Tiara and Queen Sophie’s Pearl and Diamond Brooch.
Princess Beatrix wore an extremely elegant embroidered dress, in white and light blue, and sparkled with her pearl and diamond jewels. During the evening, Princess Beatrix carried a small, elegant bunch of white flowers in her hand
