Koningsdag 2025

The Dutch Royal Family joined King Willem-Alexander for the annual Koningsdag (King’s Day) celebrations in Doetinchem on April 26th.  Koningsdag, a Bank Holiday in the Netherlands, celebrates King Willem-Alexander’s Birthday, and members of the Royal Family attend celebrations in a different city each year, though it is taking place one day earlier this year.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima were joined by members of the extended Dutch Royal Family, including the Princess of Orange and Princess Alexia, for the annual Koningsdag (King’s Day) celebrations in Doetinchem in the province of Gelderlan.

Walking across a farmyard, the Royal Family meets farmers from the region. They sit down at the Achterhoek kitchen table, the place where they eat, laugh and make new ideas are born.

A large orange ball sets the relay in motion on the Sportlaan. Cooperation and fun are the basis for a lifelong sport and exercise for everyone. The Royal family meets athletes and volunteers of all ages.

Who knows the most about the Achterhoek? The Royal Family will participate in the King’s Day Quiz with sports icons from the region in the Kleine Vijverberg stadium.

The group is taken on a journey through the past, present and future of Doetinchem. A street artist creates a triptych about the past, young people talk about the present in a shack and the youth builds the future of the city.

“Doetinchem, the Achterhoek and Gelderland have shown here how you can create such an amazing King’s Day by working together, living together, connecting together. Let’s hold on to that, let’s do that every day of the year.” – King Willem-Alexander.
