Queen Margrethe II and Prince Henrik of Denmark were hosted by King Fahd of Saudi Arabia on their State Visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on this day in 1984, 40 years ago, becoming the second female Head of State to visit the Middle East five years after Queen Elizabeth II became the first female Head of State to visit the Middle East.
In a grand Official Welcome Ceremony, Queen Margrethe (in her Wedding Earrings and Queen Josefina’s Diamond Brooches) was received by King Fahd of Saudi Arabia at Jeddah Airport before an Audience at the Royal Palace.
That evening, King Fahd hosted a spectacular State Banquet in honour of Queen Margrethe (wearing the Pearl Poiré Tiara, Khedive of Egypt Parure and Pearl Poire Brooch) and Prince Henrik at the Royal Palace, during which the King was presented with the Order of the Elephant, while Queen Margrethe received her spectacular Harry Winston Diamond Necklace from King Fahd.
Queen Margrethe debuted a striking modest wardrobe for a series of engagements throughout the state visit, which included a Picnic in the Desert and Camel Racing.
At the end of the State Visit, Queen Margrethe (wearing Princess Dagmar’s Diamond Floral Tiara, her new Harry Winston Diamond Necklace, and Queen Josefina’s Diamond Brooch) and Prince Henrik hosted a Return Banquet in honour of King Fahd and the Saudi Royal Family.
