British State Visit to Malaysia, 1998

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Raja Permaisuri Agong of Malaysia hosted the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh on their State Visit to Malaysia on this day in 1998, 25 years ago, following a State Visit to Brunei. This was their third visit to Malaysia, following a State Visit in 1972 and another in 1989, while there was a Malaysian State Visit to Britain in 1993.

Following their arrival in Kuala Lumpur, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh began the visit with the Sunday Service At St. Mary’s Cathedral In Kuala Lumpur. The following day, the Queen and Duke were welcomed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia in an Official Welcome Ceremony at the Istana Negara before going on a Train to the XVI Commonwealth Games, which were then officially closed by the Queen that evening.

The following evening, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Raja Permaisuri Agong of Malaysia (in the Gandik Diraja Tiara) hosted a splendid State Banquet in honour fo the Queen (wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara and her King Khalid Diamond Necklace) and Duke of Edinburgh at the Istana Negara in Kuala Lumpur.

The Queen visited the Petronas Twin Towers, a Children’s Shelter, an Art Gallery, and the British Malaysian Institute as well as meeting World War II Veterans at the Carcosa Residence before hosting a Return Dinner for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Raja Permaisuri Agong of Malaysia at the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur.
