Princess Diana’s Sapphire Earrings

Happy Birthday to the Princess of Wales, who turns 41 today! The future Queen has worn a plethora of Royal Heirlooms over the years, which we covered in our series on the Jewels of the Princess of Wales last year, and today we are featuring a jewel debuted in the last year: Princess Diana’s Sapphire Earrings!

Composed of a cabochon sapphire surrounded by 8 diamonds with a single diamond holding up a larger cabochon sapphire surrounded by 9 diamonds, the Sapphires in these earrings reportedly originate from the strap of Princess Diana’s Saudi Sapphire Watch, differing from a similar pair of earrings which were surrounded by smaller diamonds without the central diamond between the two clusters.

The Earrings appeared on the Princess of Wales in the mid-1980s, being worn with her Sapphire Choker on a visit to Vienna in 1986 and for the Greek Royal Family’s Ball at Claridge’s Hotel, and with the Saudi Sapphire Choker for a performance of ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ and also the Starlight Cabaret  later that year.

The Princess wore the Sapphire and Diamond Earrings for numerous portraits and at a Gala Dinner at the Hotel Hyatt in Melbourne in 1988, as well as for the Carnival of the Birds for the RSPB Charity at the Royal Opera House in 1991, as well as a visit to the Royal Albert Hall.

In 1994, the now separated Princes of Wales wore the Sapphire and Diamond Earrings for a photoshoot by Patrick Demarchelier, taken for her 33rd Birthday, which appeared on the cover of the July 1994 British Vogue. After her passing in 1997, the Earrings were inherited by her sons and remained publicly unworn for the next 25 years.

While a pair of sapphire and diamond earrings worn by the then Duchess of Cambridge have long been speculated to have originated from the collection of her late mother-in-law, these Sapphire and Diamond Earrings were only publicly debuted at the Trooping the Colour Ceremony in 2022, during the Queens Platinum Jubilee Celebrations.

Most recently, Princess Diana’s Sapphire Earrings were worn by the Princess of Wales as she and the Prince arrived in Boston to attend the Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony. There is no doubt we will continue to see these heirloom earrings for years to come!
