Happy Birthday to Princess Märtha Louise of Norway, who is celebrating her 51st Birthday today! The only daughter of King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway, and the only Princess of the Blood of her generation, Princess Märtha Louise has accumulated quite a substantial jewellery collection, which we featured last year, so today, we are looking at a jewel she has worn on loan from her mother: Queen Sonja’s Aquamarine and Amethyst Suite!
Featuring a large heart-shaped Aquamarine, suspended from a necklace of Amethyst Beads with two Aquamarine Beads, as well as a Pair of Earrings which feature Inverted Rectangular Aquamarines and Amethysts, the origin of this suite is unknown, but as Queen Sonja has a large collection of modern jewellery, this was likely a gift from the King, though her daughter-in-law, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, owns a pair of similar earrings. The Suite first appeared in 1991, and the earrings were then worn on a visit to Romania in the 1990s, paired with an Amethyst Pendant from Garrards.
The Aquamarine and Amethyst Suite was notably worn by Queen Sonja on two separate occasions during a State Visit to Brazil in 2003, for the Dinner at the Governor’ Residence in São Paulo and a Reception at the Museum for Modern Art in Rio De Janeiro. The following year, the Suite was worn for a State Dinner At The Renunfication Palace In Ho Chi Minh City during a State Visit to Vietnam.
Last year, the Aquamarine and Amethyst Suite was worn by Princess Märtha Louise, paired with the Amethyst Necklace Tiara, for the State Banquet at the Royal Palace of Oslo during the Dutch State Visit to Norway. Given that the modern style of the suite suits Princess Märtha Louise, lets hope she wears it again soon!
