Happy 50th Wedding Anniversary to the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester! When Prince Richard of Gloucester married the Danish Birgitte van Deurs on this day in 1972 (50 years ago), the couple expected a life out of the spotlight, but the sudden deaths of his father and brother soon after their simple country wedding made them step up and take on the larger royal role of Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. When they were well settled into their roles as Duke and Duchess, the couple posed for a series of portraits by Tim Graham, which were taken at their apartment at Kensington Palace on this day in 1989, their 17th Wedding Anniversary.

The Duchess wore the Iveagh Tiara with a Diamond Necklace, Diamond Earrings and the Royal Family Order of Queen Elizabeth II.
The Duke wore White Tie with the Royal Victorian Order and the Order of St John.
