Crown Princess Mary of Denmark is celebrating her 50th Birthday this week, and thus we are taking the opportunity to feature some of her jewels! The Australian who is set to be the future Danish Queen has a variety of heirloom jewels at her disposal, but Crown Princess Mary also has also complied a varied collection of newly acquired antique jewels, including her versatile Wedding Tiara!

In 2004, Queen Margrethe II and Prince Henrik of Denmark acquired this antique diamond tiara, reportedly at auction, before the Wedding of their elder son, Crown Prince Frederik, to Australian Mary Donaldson, who first wore the Tiara on her Wedding Day, after wearing the Danish Ruby Parure for pre-Wedding Galas.

In the early years after her wedding, Crown Princess Mary reserved the Ruby Parure for only the most special occasions, like the annual New Year’s Court, preferring to wear her Wedding Tiara to a plethora of State Banquets, Gala Dinners, and also all, with the exception of three, Foreign Royal Events, including King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden’s 60th Birthday in 2006, King Harald V of Norway’s 70th Birthday in 2007, and the Wedding Ball of Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco in 2011. Worn almost 30 times, the Tiara is by far the most worn out of all of Crown Princess Mary’s Tiaras.

The Wedding Tiara is a versatile piece and can also be converted into a necklace, though Crown Princess Mary has only worn that configuration once, for a State Dinner at Government House in Sydney, during a visit to her native Australia in 2005.

In 2011, the Tiara was altered by Marianne Dulong to be worn with added pearls, with the option to also wear the original configuration, which was also worn a few times. The Pearl version of the Tiara was worn for a few State Banquets and Portraits, but notably made an appearance at the Wedding of Prince Carl Philip of Sweden in 2015.
Ever since Crown Princess Mary has acquired and began wearing her Necklace Tiara (the subject of tomorrow’s article), there has only been one appearance of the Wedding Tiara, at a Banquet at Christiansborg Palace in 2018. Perhaps the tiara might make an appearance as a necklace or we will have to wait a few years to see it worn by Princess Isabella or Princess Josephine since it is unlikely it will again become a regular favourite of Crown Princess Mary like a few years ago!
In 2022, Crown Princess Mary wore her Wedding Tiara for the Wedding of Prince Gustav of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg and Carina Axelsson, as well as for the Banquet and Ball for the Danish Government, Folketing, and members of the European Parliament at Christiansborg Palace.

I know it’s always better to receive a tiara than not, but this wee tiara was a bit underwhelming for a Crown Princess. It was almost completely lost in front of her wedding veil, though I can see why she would wear it instead of the much grander Ruby one. It was a lovely present from her in-laws, purchased especially for her, and something of a rarity these days. A new tiara was given to Princess Sofia of Sweden, but that was a conversion from a necklace belonging to Queen Silvia and not a new purchase. Queen Mathilde was given a new tiara, but that was a collective purchase from the Belgian aristocracy and not from the King and Queen, so Mary must have felt pretty special to be singled out that way. Moving forward, I think her wedding tiara was much improved with the addition of the pearls. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if she’ll pass it on to her daughter Princess Isabella pretty soon. Her wedding earrings, though, were magnificent! I had never seen them in such a wonderful close-up and they are stunning!
