Spanish State Visits to Sweden

King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain will begin a State Visit to Sweden tomorrow, where they will be hosted by the Swedish Royal Family! The first Spanish State Visit to Sweden in over 40 years promises to be a splendid occasion, so we are featuring all the previous Spanish State Visits to Sweden. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and King Felipe VI of Spain are both descended through Queen Victoria from their respective grandmother, Crown Princess Margareta of Sweden, and great-grandmother, Queen Victoria Eugenie of Spain.  

The Spanish State Visit to Sweden in 2021

In 1928, King Alfonso XIII of Spain was hosted by the Swedish Royal Family on his State Visit to Sweden, which began with an Official Welcome, followed by a visit to the Stockholm City Hall, a Royal Hunt at Hunneberg, a Banquet at the Royal Palace of Stockholm, a Return Dinner at the Spanish Embassy which was followed by a Gala Performance at the Stockholm Opera, which was attended by both Kings, Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf and Crown Princess Louise (wearing Queen Sofia’s 9-Prong Tiara), Prince Carl and Princess Ingeborg (in the Napoleonic Emerald Parure), Prince Gustaf Adolf and Princess Ingrid and Princess Alice of Greece (in a mystery Tiara).

Spanish State Visit to Sweden in 1979

The next Spanish State Visit to Sweden came in 1979, when King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden hosted King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain, with highlights including a State Banquet hosted by King Carl XVI Gustaf (wearing the Order of Charles III) and Queen Silvia (in the Leuchtenberg Sapphire Parure and the Order of Isabella the Catholic) and King Juan Carlos (wearing the Order of the Seraphim) and Queen Sofia (in the Spanish Floral Tiara and the Order of the Seraphim) at the Royal Palace of Stockholm, also attended by Prince Bertil (wearing the Order of Charles III), Princess Lillian (in the Laurel Wreath Tiara and the Order of Isabella the Catholic), and Princess Desiree (wearing her Tiara).

King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia (wearing the Prussian Diamond Tiara and her Emerald Parure) also hosted a Return Banquet for King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia (wearing the Napoleonic Amethyst Tiara), which was also attended by Prince Bertil and Princess Lillian (wearing the Four-Button Tiara), Princess Margaretha (in the Aquamarine Kokoshnik Tiara), Princess Desiree (wearing her Tiara), and Princess Christina (in her Tiara). King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia (wearing the Niarchos Ruby Parure) also joined King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia (in Queen Sofia’s 9-Prong Tiara), Prince Bertil and Princess Lillian (wearing the Baden Fringe Tiara) for a Gala Performance in Stockholm.

Swedish State Visit to Spain in 1983

King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia hosted King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden on their Return Visit to Spain in 1983, the highlight of which was a State Banquet hosted by King Juan Carlos (wearing the Order of the Seraphim and Order of the Golden Fleece) and Queen Sofia (in the Fleur-de-Lys Tiara for the first time and the Order of the Seraphim) in honour of King Carl XVI Gustaf (wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece and Order of the Sword) and Queen Silvia (in the Connaught Tiara and Order of Isabella the Catholic) at the Royal Palace of Madrid. King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia (in the Napoleonic Amethyst Tiara) also hosted a Return Banquet in honour of King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia (in the Floral Tiara), and Infanta Elena (wearing the Prussian Diamond Tiara) at the Swedish Embassy in Madrid.

It has already been announced that King Felipe has awarded the Grand Cross of the Royal and Distinguished Spanish Order of Carlos III to Queen Silvia, while Crown Princess Victoria has received the Grand Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic, and Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia have been given the Order of Civil Merit. King Felipe was made a Knight of the Swedish Order of the Seraphim, Sweden’s highest Honour, in 1991, but Queen Letizia will receive the Order of the Seraphim ahead of the State Banquet tomorrow.
