Happy Birthday to the Princess Royal, who turns 69 today! As the only daughter of the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, and one of the most hardworking members of the family, the Princess Royal has amassed quite a large jewellery collection. In honour of her birthday, we are featuring her modern Diamond Necklace.
Diamond Festoon Tiara | Princess Andrew’s Meander Tiara | Cartier Aquamarine Pineflower Tiara | Festoon Necklace | Modern Diamond Necklace | Empress Maria Feodorovna’s Sapphire Choker | Queen Mary’s City of London Choker | Turquoise Necklace | Diamond Bow Brooch | Diamond Star Brooch | Queen Alexandra’s Edwardian Choker | Top 7 Jewels | Princess Anne’s Tiaras
A densely-packed modern Diamond Necklace of ‘twenty-one triangular clusters of large collet drops are suspended between two looped motifs; at the back is a chain of diamond collets’, this piece is reportedly a 21st Birthday Gift from the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh in 1971. (h/t to Beth and Maridje).
The Diamond Necklace was first seen with Princess Andrew’s Meander Tiara at the 1971 Persepolis Celebrations to mark the 2500th Anniversary of the Persian Empire, and then a few months later when Princess Anne accompanied her parents on a State Visit to Thailand in 1972, also on a visit to Yugoslavia and with the Diamond Festoon Tiara for a series of portraits by Lord Lichfield, which were released on her 23rd Birthday.
Princess Anne has often paired the modern Diamond Necklace with Princess Andrew’s Meander Tiara and her Diamond Festoon Tiara over the years, and has usually worn the piece with one of the versions of her Diamond Cluster Earrings.
Princess Anne continued to wear the Diamond Necklace with Princess Andrew’s Meander Tiara for Gala Events and Banquets until recent years, though after being worn at King Harald’s 70th Birthday Banquet in 2007 it has now not been publicly seen for several years. Princess Anne remains an active royal, so lets hope it reappears soon!
The Royal Family has shared a new Official Portrait of the Princess Royal and Sir Timothy Laurence ahead of her 75th Birthday next week, which was taken by Getty Images Photographer Chris Jackson ahead of the State Banquet held by the British Royal Family for French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron at Windsor Castle last month.
The Princess Royal wore her Diamond Festoon Tiara, with her Diamond Festoon Necklace, and Diamond Bow Brooch along with the Sash and Star of the Order of the Garter, the Royal Family Order of King Charles III, and the Royal Family Order of Queen Elizabeth II.

Unlike her Festoon Necklace, this is not one of her most worn pieces, though has continued to be sparely worn over the decades. Princess Anne remains an active royal, so there is now doubt we will continue to see the necklace for years to come.
