Wedding of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester

Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, third son of King George V and Queen Mary, married Lady Alice Montagu Douglas Scott, daughter of the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry, in the Private Chapel of Buckingham Palace. The wedding was originally planned for a public ceremony at Westminster Abbey, but can been ‘toned-down’ after the death of the bride’s father just weeks before and the failing health of the King, who died two months later. While the ceremony itself was private, various official group portraits were released.

The Duke and new Duchess also waved to the various assembled from the Balcony of Buckingham Palace. They were joined by members of their families and the bridal party.

The newlyweds were also pictured leaving Buckingham Palace, towards the train station, to start their honeymoon.

The Duke of Gloucester wore Uniform with the Sash and Star of the Order of the Garter. The new Duchess of Gloucester wore a pearl pink Norman Hartnell gown, establishing a family tradition, which led to Hartnell designing the wedding gowns of the Queen and Princess Margaret.
