Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, third son of King George V and Queen Mary, married Lady Alice Montagu Douglas Scott, daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry, in the Private Chapel of Buckingham Palace. The wedding was originally planned for a public ceremony at Westminster Abbey, but can been ‘toned-down’ after the death of the bride’s father just weeks before and the failing health of the King, who died two months later.
After the private ceremony, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester waved to the assembled crowds from the Balcony of Buckingham Palace, joined by members of their families and the bridal party.
The newlywed Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were also seen leaving Buckingham Palace, towards the Victoria Station, to start their honeymoon.
Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret with Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, Lady Patricia Ramsay, Princess Maud, Countess of Southesk, Princess Marie Louise and Princess Helena Victoria among others.
The new Duchess of Gloucester wore a pearl pink Norman Hartnell gown, establishing a family tradition, which led to Hartnell designing the wedding gowns of the Queen and Princess Margaret. The Duke of Gloucester wore Uniform with the Sash and Star of the Order of the Garter.
When Lady Alice Montagu-Douglas-Scott married Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester in 1935, she received two Tiaras from Queen Mary, two Tiaras and several Jewels from the groom, and two Parures from King George V among a thousand wedding gifts, many of which were displayed at St. James’s Palace 90 years ago.
