Pahang State Tiara

Happy Birthday to Queen Azizah of Malaysia, the XVI Raja Permaisuri Agong and the Tengku Ampuan of Pahang, who turns 60 today! The beloved Johor Princess who became the inspirational Tengku Ampuan of Pahang and is now the Raja Permaisuri Agong (Queen) of the world’s only rotational Monarchy, Queen Azizah, who we met in London earlier this year, has a splendid jewellery collection, which includes the magnificent emblematic Pahang State Tiara!

Featuring the emblem of Pahang Darul Makmur in gold inside a modern diamond frame, the Pahang State Tiara was created in 1974. Pahang is the third largest of the thirteen Malay States, which are each ruled by a Sultan, one of whom is elected for a rotational five-year term as the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong (King) of Malaysia. The State Tiara coordinates very well with a similar jewel worn by the Sultan on his headress.

The first wearer of the Pahang State Tiara was Tengku Ampuan Afzan of Pahang, the mother-in-law of Queen Azizah, who first wore a smaller version of the diadem, featuring the central element, before she commissioned the new surrounding design.

After Tengku Ampuan Afzan’s death in 1988, the Pahang State Tiara was not worn by her successor, Sultanah Kalsom, and remained publicly unworn until January last year, when after the abdication of her father-in-law, Queen Azizah became the Tengku Ampuan of Pahang and wore the Tiara at the ceremony.

A few days later, Queen Azizah wore the Pahang State Tiara again when the Sultan was elected as the 16th Yang Di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, and they made their formal entry into Kuala Lumpur, a few months before their Official Installation.

After the Installation of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in July, Queen Azizah wore the Diadem at the Installation Banquet, signifying their link with their State. While the Gandik Diraja Tiara, which we have covered previously, will pass to the next Raja Permaisuri Agong in 2024, as the Tengku Ampuan of Pahang, the Pahang State Tiara is set to remain Queen Azizah’s most prominent diadem for years to come.

As she shared with us a few days ago, Queen Azizah wore the Pahang State Tiara for the Sultan of Pahang’s 65th Birthday Celebrations at the Istana Abdulaziz in Kuantan in 2024.
