In the month of June, the Portuguese Royal Treasure Museum has finally opened its doors after years of waiting. The city of Lisbon now has a new cultural sight which is housed in one of the largest safes in the world, divided by 3 floors and equipped with a sophisticated security system. It gives permanent display to a unique collection of important heritage value, with over one thousand pieces, comprising jewellery, insignia, decorations, coins, and pieces of civil and religious gold-smithery, and so assistant editor, David Rato, has written about the splendid exhibition after his visit!

The Austrian Archduchess, from the Habsburg-Teschen branch, who become the wife of King Alfonso XII before serving as Spain’s Regent for 17 years after his premature death, ‘Doña Virtudes’ was known for her strong religious beliefs, austerity and staidness. Despite that, she had a great interest in jewellery, possessing a splendid collection that was later spread among her descendants, so to mark this Anniversary, we are featuring her massive Devant-de-Corsage Brooch!

Today marks the anniversary of the birth of the late Queen Fabiola of the Belgians, daughter of the Marquess and Marchioness of Casa Riera, Fabiola de Mora y Aragón was born on this day in Spain in 1928! While she did not had access to a massive family jewellery collection, like the ones of her counterparts, the Queen was able to assemble a decent collection throughout the decades, result of several acquisitions and gifts from her husband, King Baudouin, as well as some official gifts. 60 years ago, in May 1962, European Royalty and Aristocracy gathered in the city of Athens for a week full of celebrations, culminating in the Catholic and Orthodox Wedding Ceremonies of Juan Carlos, Prince of Asturias, and Princess Sofia of Greece and Denmark. On one of the evenings, the distinguished guests enjoyed a Soirée at the Hotel Grande Bretagne, where many of the Royals were staying for the week.
