Wedding of Count Bertil Bernadotte and Rosemarie Heering

Princess Margrethe and Princess Benedikte of Denmark led the Swedish and Danish Nobility at the Wedding of their cousin, Count Bertil Bernadotte, and friend, Rosemarie Heering, at the Holmen’s Church in Copenhagen on this day in 1966, 60 years ago!

Count Bertil Bernadotte, youngest son of the legendary Count Folke Bernadotte and Estelle Manville, married Rosemarie Heering at the Holmen’s Church in Copenhagen.

During the wedding reception, a memorable accident occurred on the dance floor. Rosemarie’s exquisite, heirloom lace wedding veil caught fire after brushing against the flame of a candle. The veil was badly burned, causing significant distress to her mother, who had originally purchased the piece with the intention of passing it down through future generations.

Tragically, there would be no descendants to inherit it. Shortly after their marriage, Rosemarie fell severely ill with cancer. She passed away on November 1, 1967, at just 25 years old—only thirteen months after their wedding day. Count Bertil later remarried in 1981 to Jill Georgina Rhodes-Maddox, with whom he had two children
