Today marks the 30th Anniversary of the Death of the late Lady Montagu of Beaulieu, who passed away at the age of 101 on this day in 1996! Lady Montagu often wore this delicate Pearl and Diamond Tiara, which was recently displayed at Beaulieu Palace House!
The exact origin of the Pearl and Diamond Tiara is unknown but it looks to be a converted necklace dating from the Victorian era, possibly an heirloom from the time of the 1st Baroness Montagu of Beaulieu, whose husband was the son of the fabulously wealthy 5th Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch.
Two years after her marriage to the much older Baron Montagu of Beaulieu, Lady Montagu was pictured wearing the Pearl and Diamond Tiara at the State Opening of Parliament in 1922.
A few years later, the Tiara was worn by Lady Montagu in a portrait published following the birth of the couple’s son and heir, the future 3rd Baron Montagu.
Lady Montagu also wore the Pearl and Diamond Tiara for the State Opening of Parliament in 1930, the year after the death of the 2nd Baron.
In 1958, the Pearl and Diamond Tiara was worn by Belinda Crossley when she married the 3rd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu at Beaulieu Abbey, along with the heirloom Pearl and Diamond Necklace and Corsage Brooch.
More recently, the Pearl and Diamond Tiara was displayed at Beaulieu Palace House when the current Lord Montagu of Beaulieu gave a tour to the now Countess of Sandwich in 2022.
