The Dutch Royal Family gathered to celebrate the Engagement of Princess Beatrix of The Netherlands and Claus van Amsberg at the Soestdijk Palace on this day in 1965, 60 years ago!
Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard announced the Engagement of Princess Beatrix of The Netherlands and German Diplomat Claus van Amsberg at the Soestdijk Palace in Baarn.
The couple were joined by their families as they posed for the press. The announcement was made by Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard in radio and television broadcasts.
Following the announcement, a bill was passed by both houses of the Dutch parliament consenting to the marriage. Claus von Amsberg became a Dutch citizen and received the title of Prince of the Netherlands and the designation Jonkheer van Amsberg upon their marriage
Princess Beatrix wore Queen Emma’s Mellerio Diamond Flowers.
They got married in 1966, had three sons, succeeded to the Throne in 1980, Prince Claus passed away in 2002, and Queen Beatrix abdicated in 2013.
