Happy Birthday to Queen Saleha of Brunei, who turns 77 today! The illustrious Princess who married her first cousin, the Sovereign of the wealthy Sultanate, and is now the world’s longest-serving Queen Consort, Queen Saleha has a massive jewellery collection, with the highlight being the obscenely massive Coloured Diamond Tiara!
A massive Tiara composed of various large Diamonds in modern cuts and various colours, this diadem is of an unknown provenance but was likely acquired by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei for Queen Saleha.
Queen Saleha began wearing the coloured Diamond Tiara around the time of the Sultan of Brunei’s Silver Jubilee Celebrations in 1992, with a prominent appearance for the Banquet at the Istana Nurul Iman in Bandar Seri Begawan and for an official portrait.
Unlike her other Tiaras, this Tiara has only been loaned once to family members, when in 1996, it was worn by Queen Saleha’s elder daughter, Princess Rashidah Sa’adatul of Brunei for her Wedding to Pengiran Maharaja Setia Laila di-Raja Sahibul Irshad Pengiran Anak Haji ‘Abdul Rahim.
In 1998, Queen Saleha wore the coloured Diamond Tiara for the spectacular State Banquet in honour of the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh at the Istana Nurul Iman in Bandar Seri Begawan.
Two years later, Queen Saleha wore the Diamond Tiara for the Sultan’s annual Birthday Celebrations at the Istana Nurul Iman in Bandar Seri Begawan, with the same Tiara being worn for the following year’s celebrations.
The more recent appearance of the coloured Diamond Tiara came in 2006, when Queen Saleha wore the Tiara for the Sultan’s 60th Birthday Celebrations at the Istana Nurul Iman. In recent years, Queen Saleha has acquired several new tiaras and usually prefers to wear her Emerald Tiara or Diamond Heart Tiara. Lets hope we see it worn again soon!
