British State Visit to Brunei, 1998

The Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei hosted the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh on their State Visit to Brunei on this day in 1998, 25 years ago, as part of a Far Eastern Tour, which was their second visit to Brunei, following a brief Visit in 1972, while there was a Brunei State Visit to Britain in 1992.

The Sultan of Brunei was joined by Queen Saleha and Princess Consort Mariam to welcome the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh at the Istana Nurul Iman in Bandar Seri Begawan with an Official Welcome Ceremony and a Guard of Honour.

In the evening, the Sultan, Queen Saleha (wearing her Coloured Diamond Tiara), and Princess Consort Mariam (in her Diamond Tiara) hosted a spectacular State Banquet for the Queen (wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara and her King Khalid Diamond Necklace) and Duke of Edinburgh at the Istana Nurul Iman in Bandar Seri Begawan, which was attended by members of the extended rune Royal Family, led by the newly appointed Crown Prince Billah.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh visited the Jame’asr Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque in Bandar Seri Begawan on the second day of their 3-Day State Visit, while they went to the Tamu Kianggeh open market on the final day before going on a State Visit to Malaysia.
