Prince and Princess of Wales in Thailand, 1988

The Thai Royal Family hosted the Prince and Princess of Wales on their Official Visit to Thailand on this day in 1988, many years after the British State Visit to Thailand in 1972 and the Thai State Visit to Britain in 1960. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh made another State Visit to Thailand in 1996.

On arrival in Bangkok, the Prince and Princess of Wales were welcomed by  Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn and Princess Maha Chakri, and their visit included a trip to the famed Temple of the Emerald Buddha at the Grand Palace in Bangkok.

The Prince and Princess of Wales had an audience with King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit at the Dusit Palace, in the presence of several members of the Thai Royal Family, during which they presented 60th Birthday Greetings to the King.

The highlight of the trip was a traditional Thai Dinner hosted by Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn and Princess Maha Chakri in honour of the Prince and Princess of Wales, before they went on a visit to Chiang Mai.
