Dutch State Banquet at the Palace of Versailles, 1972

President Georges Pompidou and First Lady Claude Pompidou hosted a State Banquet for Queen Juliana (wearing the Mellerio Ruby Tiara and Parure) and Prince Bernhard of The Netherlands in the Grand Trianon of the Palace of Versailles on this day in 1972, following a Gala Performance in the Palace Theatre on the evening of the first day of the Dutch State Visit to France. Queen Juliana sparked off a major European row in a speech in reply to President Pompidou, over the question of whether there should be an independent Europe, or they should be in cooperation with the United States.

Princess Irene (wearing the Bourbon-Parma Tiara) and Prince Carlos Hugo, the Duke of Parma, were also present.
