Princess Benedikte’s Amethyst Suite

Happy Birthday to Princess Benedikte of Denmark and Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, who turns 78 today! The sister of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and Queen Anne Marie of Greece, related to most European Royals, Princess Benedikte has a huge jewellery collection, which includes this splendid Amethyst Suite!

Consisting of a necklace with a detachable pendant, a pair of earrings, and a brooch set with splendid faceted amethysts, this suite was made in the late 19th-century, and acquired by Queen Ingrid in the 1970s, though she was not pictured in the amethysts. The suite was left to her middle daughter, Princess Benedikte, in 2000, and was notably worn on a visit to her mother’s native Sweden in 2002, for the Nobel Prize Ceremony and Banquet.

In 2006, Princess Benedikte wore the Amethyst Suite for the wedding of her nephew Prince Philip of Hesse and Laetitia Bechtolf. The suite was later paired with the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg Fringe Tiara for Queen Margrethe’s 70th Birthday Gala Dinner in 2010.

The more recent appearance of the Amethyst Suite came in 2012, when Princess Benedikte paired the necklace with the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg Fringe Tiara and her Diamond Fan Earrings for Queen Margrethe’s Ruby Jubilee Banquet. There is no doubt we will continue to see this splendid suite for years to come!
