Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh arrived in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on this day in 1951, during their extensive Tour of Canada, different phases of which we have been individually covering over the past few weeks. Following a busy Summer, with the Opening of the Festival of Britain, the Danish State Visit, the Norwegian State Visit, the Tour of Canada was the first sign of Princess Elizabeth and the Duke, who had given up his Naval Career, becoming full-time working Royals in the last few months of King George VI’s life, ahead of her Accession to the Throne.

Following a Welcome at Queens Square in Charlottetown, Princess Elizabeth (wearing the Girls of Great Britain & Ireland Tiara, the George VI Sapphire Parure, and the Order of the Garter) and the Duke of Edinburgh were guests of honour at a Banquet hosted by the Prince Edward Island Government at the Charlottetown Hotel, where Premier J. Walter Jones gave a speech:
Your Royal Highness, The high honour falls to me of welcoming you and your royal consort, Prince Philip, to Prince Edward Island, the smallest but by no means the least distinctive province of Canada. Our people have ever borne a warm attachment to the throne, and, in peace and war, have cherished our ties of British kin.”
