Queen’s Bahrain Pearl Earrings

Happy Birthday to the Duchess of Cambridge, who turns 39 today! The future Queen Consort has worn a variety of heirloom royal jewels over the years, and to mark the day, we are featuring the Queen’s Bahrain Pearl Earrings.

In 1947, the then Princess Elizabeth received seven large pearls as a wedding gift from the Hakim of Bahrain, when she married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten. Two of those pearls were soon used to create these earrings which feature them suspended from a modern design that includes large and small round diamonds and three baguette diamonds.

The earrings were prominently worn on a 1951 Tour of Canada and later for one of the Queen’s first Official Portraits, paired with the George IV State Diadem and the Nizam of Hyderabad Necklace. While the were not prominently worn for a few decades, the Queen notably wore her Bahrain Pearl Earrings at the Festival of Remembrance in 2015.

Throughout the years, the Queen has frequently loaned the Bahrain Pearl Earrings to family members, first to the Princess of Wales for the Dutch State Visit to Britain in 1982 and then to the Countess of Wessex in 2014.
