Princess Viggo of Denmark

Today marks the Anniversary of the Death of Princess Viggo of Denmark, who died on this day in 1966! Born Eleanor Margaret Green in New York City in 1895, she was the daughter of Dr. James Oliver Green and Amelia Hewitt Green, coming from a long line of American industrialists, and growing up at Ringwood Manor in New Jersey. In 1924, she married Prince Viggo of Denmark, a cousin of the Danish King, who renounced his place  in the line of succession to the Crown, his title, and his style of Royal Highness as was customary upon marriage to a commoner. However, he was allowed to assume the title of Prince Viggo, Count of Rosenborg, and so Eleanor Margaret Green became Her Highness Princess Viggo, Countess of Rosenborg. The couple had no children, though she did leave many of her jewels to her niece-in-law, Countess Ruth of Rosenborg, and resided at Bernstorff Palace. Princess Viggo was very involved in charity work, notably knitting woollen sweaters and socks for prison-camp internees during World War II, which was aided by her large inheritance received from various relatives. Princess Viggo remained a beloved member of the extended Danish Royal Family until her death in 1966. Prince Viggo passed away in 1970.
