June 26th 1965, my mother’s cousin Princess Olympia Torlonia got married in Rome in the basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere to the French industrialist Paul-Annick Weiller. My twin and I were two of the 6 little pages of honor dressed in 18th Century style sky blue silk capes and trousers and white shirts and stockings. There was a terrible heat wave with temperatures close to 95 degrees. My mother was worried we might faint and told us that if we didn’t feel well to come see her and she would give us a candy.
Those big, flat, white, round candies melted in your mouth and felt very cold…bliss…pure yumminess… and during the whole mass I was obsessed with this delicious candy. Of course at that age I had no idea it was so hot and I hadn’t even noticed the heat. Unable to resist any longer I crossed the church to claim the candy!Yes that little boy in the center of the photo is me going to see my mother (fourth from right under the column with a big hat) my mother thought it was very funny and gave me the candy when I pretended that I thought I might not feel well and “needed “ the candy.
