Today marks the anniversary of the Regicide, O Regicídio de 1908, of King Carlos I of Portugal and his heir-apparent, Luís Filipe, the Prince Royal of Portugal, by anarchists sympathetic to Republican interests and aided by elements within the Portuguese Carbonária, disenchanted politicians and anti-monarchists. The King, Queen, Prince Royal and Infante Manuel were returning to Lisbon from their winter residence in Vila Viçosa. The Regicide led to the accession of the younger son, King Manuel, who only reigned for two years before he was deposed and the Portuguese monarchy was abolished.
