Australian State Opening of Parliament, 1954

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh preside over the Australian State Opening of Parliament at Parliament House in Canberra on this day in 1954. This was one of a series of State Openings in Australia, New Zealand, and Ceylon during their 6-month Commonwealth Tour, and the first time that the Parliament had been opened by a reigning Sovereign.

The Queen wore her Coronation gown with Queen Alexandra’s Kokoshnik Tiara, her Coronation Necklace and Earrings, and the Order of the Garter. Lady Pamela Mountbatten wore her Hicks Tiara.
