The Engagement of Prince Fumihito, second son of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan, and Kiko Kawashima (the first woman from a middle-class background to marry into the Imperial Family, known as the ‘Apartment Princess’) at the Akasaka Palace in Tokyo on this day in 1989. The couple got married the following year, and have three children, becoming the Crown Prince and Crown Princess earlier this year, set to eventually succeed Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako.
