Portuguese State Visit to Belgium

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium are hosting the President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of the Republic of Portugal on a State Visit to Belgium from October 16 to 19, at the invitation of the Belgian Government to celebrate and build diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties, under the themes of digitalization, innovation and energy. The Belgian King and Queen went on a State Visit to Portugal in 2018.

In the morning, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde welcomed Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa at the Royal Palace in Brussels, instead of an Official Welcome Ceremony at the Place des Palais (Paleizenplein) in Brussels, which had been cancelled due to the previous evening’s terror attack in Brussels.

In the evening, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde hosted a State Banquet in honour of President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa at the Royal Château de Laeken. Both the King and President gave speeches and before dinner a minute’s silence was held for the victims.
