Princess Laurentien’s Mellerio Diamond Star Brooch

Happy Birthday to Princess Laurentien of The Netherlands, who turns 57 today! The sister-in-law of the Dutch King, known for her fight against illiteracy and eccentric sartorial choices, Princess Laurentien has worn many spectacular Heirloom Jewels from the Dutch Royal Collection, but one of her most worn pieces is this Diamond Star Brooch!

A striking four-pointed Diamond Star surrounded by diamonds, this Diamond Star Brooch was among a large order of Jewellery for Queen Emma from the famed jeweller Mellerio in 1888, sharing characteristics with several diamond bracelets in the family collection as well as the Dutch Diamond Stars.

The Diamond Star Brooch first appears around 2006, when it was first worn by Princess Laurentien at the the annual Prinsjesdag Ceremony, followed by two further appearances at Prinsjesdag in 2011 and Prinsjesdag in 2012.

One of the more notable appearances of the Diamond Star Brooch came in 2013, when Princess Laurentien wore it for the Inauguration of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima in Amsterdam.

In recent years, Princess Laurentien has continued to wear the Diamond Star Brooch pinned on the Sash of her Order of the House of Orange, primarily at the annual Prinsjesdag Ceremony: in 2014, at the Prinsjesdag in 2017 and most recently at Prinsjesdag in 2022. There is no doubt we will continue to see this striking royal heirloom for years to come!
