The Prince of Wales joined the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh on a visit to the terminally-ill Duke and Duchess of Windsor at the Villa Windsor in the Bois de Boulogne near Paris on this day in 1972, during the British State Visit to France, which came just ten days before the former King’s death.

  1. I’m glad that there was an opportunity for the Queen, Prince Philip, and the Prince of Wales to visit the Duke of Windsor before he died. Queen Elizabeth didn’t harbor any resentment towards them, so she was able to be generous and pay them a visit when the occasion arose, namely during the State Visit. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor lived a very vacuous existence, no doubt of their own doing. I think that they probably thought that in time, things would normalize and they would be able to return to the UK. They just didn’t count on the Queen Mother’s ability to hold a grudge forever.
