Koningsdag 2022

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands were joined by members of the extended Dutch Royal Family, including the Princess of Orange, Princess Alexia, and Princess Ariane, for the annual Koningsdag (King’s Day) celebrations in Maastricht on April 27th. Koningsdag, a Bank Holiday in the Netherlands, celebrates King Willem-Alexander’s Birthday, and members of the Royal Family attend celebrations in a different city each year.

The Royal Family began their day at the Sint Servaasbrug Bridge in Maastricht, where the city originated, being welcomed by the mayor and governor before watching the water sports clubs pfof the city and its surroundings. The Royal Family then started on the route called the ‘Maastricht life’ and the ‘Limburg life’, followed by ‘European life’ and ‘Gateway to Europe’, while the King and Princess of Orange minted the first two commemorative coins of the Maastricht Treaty.

The Royal Family continued along the ‘Student Life’ route with a performance with music and dance on the Graanmarkt. After this, they competed against each other in a quiz about the local language, Mestreechs. The route continueed along the ‘Burgundian life’, with local dishes are prepared with the help of the royal family, as well as a performance by André Rieu on the Onze Lieve Vrouwenplein. The Royal Family then become acquainted with ‘Cultural life’ and the many carnival associations in Maastricht.
